Create A Social Media Plan That Works.

Create A Social Media Plan That Works.

As we approach the new year, it's the perfect time to have a think about our businesses. I don't know about you, but at this time of the year I tend to do a lot of soul searching over the Christmas period. I ask myself questions which make me think about the things that have worked well during the past 12 months and the things which haven't worked out. I will then create a plan for the next 12 months. I thought I would share it with you to. I hope that it helps.

Let's build our small businesses together!

Why do I need a social media plan?

I'm guessing you probably know the answer to this already, but just to clarify...There Simply Is No Escape. Social media is a must if you want your business to grow and be seen. But just how do you make sure that the right people see it? How do you get people to interact with you and buy your products and services?

You Need A Plan! Posting on social media randomly is the equivalent to getting in the car and not knowing your destination. You may enjoy the ride, but very soon you will realise that you are driving with nowhere to go, you will become frustrated and you may feel lost.

Create A Social Media Plan That Works.

Last Christmas it was my turn to cook the lunch for the family. This made me think of small businesses like us. Anybody who has had to cook Christmas dinner will know it's not just your ordinary Sunday lunch! There is so much preparation to do. So, I sat down and wrote down exactly what ingredients I would need to cook the dinner. Then I worked backwards. What date would I need to buy the vegetables so that they would still be in date? When could I order the turkey? What date would I need to collect the turkey? What could I prepare in advance to save me time on the big day and could I freeze it, or did it need to stay fresh? The point is, as with anything I plan, I always start at the end date and then I work backwards.

So, using my analogy of the Christmas dinner, I would like you to think of your business goals. Liken the sitting down round the table to eat as your end goal in (less than) 12 months time! Where do you see your business by Christmas 2019? When you've figured it out, write it down on a piece of paper. (There is something about writing it down which makes it feel more real).

Your long-term vision may take longer than 12 months to complete. Whilst it is good to stretch yourself, it is also important that you are realistic. Now that you have your vision written down, create some marketing goals which are going to help you achieve this. Your goal should be specific and should provide an explanation of your social media plans.

I have created a guide below to help you through this process.

My Marketing Goal Is:

.................................................................................................................................................................................................................
.................................................................................................................................................................................................................
.................................................................................................................................................................................................................
.................................................................................................................................................................................................................

The date I need to achieve this goal by is (Why not break your goals into quarters to make them more achievable and realistic?)
.................................................................................................................................................................................................................

My ideal customer is:

(If you are not clear about your ideal customer, take a break and have a think about who would be the person most likely to buy from you. They are a joy to work with. They love your products and services, in fact, they are pretty sure your marketing message was speaking to only them).
.................................................................................................................................................................................................................
.................................................................................................................................................................................................................
.................................................................................................................................................................................................................
.................................................................................................................................................................................................................

My ideal customer mostly hangs out on:

  • Facebook
  • Twitter
  • Instagram
  • LinkedIn
  • Other/Specify

The main messages that I need to communicate to my ideal customer to reach my first goal is:
.................................................................................................................................................................................................................
.................................................................................................................................................................................................................
.................................................................................................................................................................................................................
.................................................................................................................................................................................................................

The main messages that I need to communicate to my ideal customer to reach my second goal is:
.................................................................................................................................................................................................................
.................................................................................................................................................................................................................
.................................................................................................................................................................................................................
.................................................................................................................................................................................................................

(Continue this same process for each of your goals).

Great Job!

You are now clear on your goals, who your ideal customer is, where they live online and your main messages. You can now begin to map out a plan to help you reach your goals. You can use this information to create a mind map, set it out on a spreadsheet or put pen to paper. Use whatever works for you. The key is to look at it regularly!
